Cameras are fascinating, especially film cameras. Kelsey and I collect them and try to shoot with them as much as we can. We love sending prints to other film enthusiasts, typically to Jack, the ultimate fanatic of old technology. Now, I'm no Timothy Hursley, but here are some photos that Iv'e taken recently.

The skin acts as a dynamic façade from the exterior, while allowing a calm, ambient light to seep into the reading room. The library is organized in a simple U-shaped configuration that forms an internal courtyard providing a sense of local domain while separating the public spaces from the more private reading spaces.

This was an attempt to contextualize the project within larger framework of theoretical investigation that integrates fabrication technologies, material culture studies, and vernacular architecture.

The larger architectural discourse is framed by the idea that textiles were the first architecture. Quilts, comprised of pieced textiles that are layered and tacked, translate through their tactile enveloping of space into architecture that exemplifies a primordial enclosure of a kind. Quilting practices such as stitching, patchwork, tacking and improvisation served as the production model for the architecture, placing value on making connections between past and present, handcrafted and machine-made, and local materials - a kind of stitched fabrication that utilizes advanced technologies. It was an integrated model of production about the human need for making, creating something out of nothing, objects made for use and often out of necessity, with a passion for beauty that provided the criteria to evaluate the constructed studio.

The city graciously supplied an existing concrete slab towards this effort. The concept behind the design is to use that existing slab as the flat of the park and to insert the skate elements into cutouts of the slab. This construction concept saves the city 40 percent on time, materials, and money. This site is adjacent to a city playground and the site of the new community center designed by Marlon Blackwell. It is also across the street from the Epicenter office/visitor center and has access to both Broadway and Main Street. Integrated into the design of the skatepark is a stage, amphitheatre, and basketball court. The Epicenter is now in the process of fundraising for the construction of the park. This was designed in collaboration with Jack Forinash and Christian Ayala.

It has been an ongoing project for the Rural Studio over the past five years, consisting of five new baseball fields, signage, seating, basketball courts, and bathrooms. The latest phase of the park consisted of a master plan that involved a soccer/football field, a mobile concession stand, playmounds for children, and a skatepark.

The park has a central space created by the hub-and-spoke layout of the four new baseball fields. This hub space, termed "Grand Central", is the site of the mobile concession stand, seating, and bathrooms. The spokes of the hub lead to other amenities of the park linking them to this main spectator space. The main spoke connects Grand Central to a secondary hub called the Great Lawn, which serves as an informal sports field, as well as, a central space for the playmounds, skatepark, and existing barbeque pavilion. This was designed in collaboration with Evan Dick, Carrie Laurendine, Sandra Wolf, John Plaster, and Terran Wilson at the Rural Studio.

The skatepark tries to fit the urban context of skating within an otherwise rural park by using these landscaped mounds to soften edges, as well as, cutting down on the amount of materials and construction costs. Because of the rural nature of the park and the anticipated users, the skatepark is designed to have a high level of durability and require very little maintenance.

The main concept behind the design is a series of thin concrete strips that fold across the landscape. Edges of the slab pull away and slide past the ground to emphasize the thin sheet of concrete. Recognizing the typical skatepark elements, the design tries to push the boundaries making the skatepark, when not in use, seem as much of a sculpture in the landscape as a site for skating. The ledges and rails, usually solid concrete elements, are instead made of contrasting steel plates welded into sculptural volumes that puncture between the concrete strips. The strips of concrete vary in dimension and slide past one another to create a hub for skating as well as extending into the landscape. These longer strips wind through a grid of existing oak trees with different elements along the trail focusing on undulation, rigidity, and level changes. This was designed in collaboration with Evan Dick and Carrie Laurendine at the Rural Studio.

Daylighting is important, to allow for reading by natural light and to deepen the sense of this library as an almost sacred place. Books not being read may only be touched by reflected light, to help to ensure their preservation. Acoustical qualities are nearly as important as those of natural light. This is a place for solitude, and for the deep reading of texts.

The cactus, a plant native to the Southwest, becomes the impetus from which the spatial edge of this library will come into being. Its unique biology, morphology, tectonics, and transformative nature are intensely studied so that they may be used to inform the architecture. From the street, through the grid of Agave plants, one descends into a recessed public plaza. Opening onto the plaza, there is a public art gallery and small library. From these small public spaces, one transitions to the subterranean private reading room, a complex progression of fluid space and light.
